Life is unpredictable.  To ensure that your wishes, your family, and your assets are protected in case of an unexpected life event, you need the following documents:

• A Will provides instructions for how your real and personal property should be distributed upon death.  It can be updated as frequently or as infrequently as you like, for changes such as the birth of a child, a child reaching the age of majority (18 years of age in Ohio), or the acquisition of a special item such as a treasured piece of jewelry.
• A Durable Power of Attorney, also known simply as a Power of Attorney, allows you to appoint someone to handle your property and finances if you become unable to do so. 
• A Health Care Power of Attorney and a Living Will allow you to control your end-of-life decisions, giving you peace of mind that your last days will proceed according to your wishes, and sparing your family from having to make decisions if you find yourself suffering from a “terminal condition” or in a “permanently unconscious state.”
• For larger, more complex estates, a Trust might be appropriate.
